Path of Exile 2 Beginner's Guide: Survive the Campaign Before 1.0 Hits

With the full free-to-play launch set for December 11, 2026, there has never been a better time to learn Path of Exile 2. This guide gets you through the campaign without a wiki open on a second monitor.

After roughly 300 hours across every major patch of Early Access, I can say Path of Exile 2 in late 2026 is the best it has ever been for new players. The Return of the Ancients update (patch 0.5.0) overhauled the endgame Atlas and added two new Ascendancy classes, the Forbidden Rites event launches September 4 with a fresh economy for anyone who wants a clean start, and the full free-to-play 1.0 release lands December 11 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Learning the game now means walking into launch already fluent. Here is what actually matters.

Pick a Class for Its Feel, Not Its Tier List Rank

Path of Exile 2's classes are starting points, not straitjackets. Every class can eventually use almost any skill, so choose based on how you want your first 30 hours to feel.

  • Warrior and Monk are melee-forward. The Monk in particular got real love in 0.5.0 with the Martial Artist Ascendancy, which manifests copies of yourself and damage-dealing bells.
  • Ranger and Huntress suit players who like mobility. The Huntress's new Spirit Walker Ascendancy channels animal spirits and can even tame bosses.
  • Sorceress and Witch are the classic caster and minion fantasies, both forgiving for learning boss patterns from range.
  • Mercenary plays like a shooter with reload timing and is the easiest pick for anyone coming from action games.

Ignore tier lists for your first character. Balance shifts every patch, and 0.5.5 is specifically buffing long-neglected damage-over-time builds, so today's meta is next month's history.

Combat Is a Fight, Not a Screen Wipe

If you arrive from Diablo 4 or the original Path of Exile, unlearn the instinct to hold one button. Path of Exile 2 wants combos, and the campaign will punish you until you cooperate.

  1. Use WASD movement on PC. It is genuinely better than click-to-move for dodging boss attacks, and the dodge roll has invincibility you should abuse.
  2. Layer your skills. Freeze with one ability, shatter with another. Poison, then detonate. Two-skill combos routinely triple your effective damage.
  3. Fight white mobs like they matter. Regular packs can kill you in the campaign. Pull small groups, use terrain and keep moving.
  4. Learn bosses by dying to them. Checkpoints sit right outside every boss arena, so deaths cost seconds. Each attempt should teach you one attack pattern.

Gems, Passives and the Gear That Actually Matters

Skill gems are your abilities, and support gems modify them. Slot supports into every active skill you use; an unsupported skill is half a skill. When you find an Uncut Skill Gem, take the highest level option you can use, and do not be precious about experimenting since respec costs are reasonable in the campaign.

For the passive tree, do not panic at the size. Pick one damage type, one weapon or skill archetype, and travel toward the big notable clusters that support it. Grab life nodes along the way. A simple rule from my own campaign runs: if you have not taken a life or defense node in your last four points, you are about to get one-shot by something.

Gear priorities in order: a weapon with high base damage for your skill, capped elemental resistances by the end of each act, then life on every remaining slot. Resistances are the invisible wall most new players hit in Act 3. Check them every time you level a zone.

Spend Your Currency, It Is Not a Trophy

There is no gold-based vendor economy for gear. Orbs are both crafting materials and currency, and hoarding them is the most common beginner mistake I see. Use Transmutation and Augmentation orbs on decent bases while leveling. Slam an Exalted Orb on a good rare. The campaign showers you with enough currency to craft your way past every difficulty spike, and none of it matters after you start a fresh league anyway. With the Forbidden Rites economy reset arriving in September, everyone starts from zero again regardless.

Conclusion

Path of Exile 2 respects players who engage with its systems and grinds down those who do not. Pick a class that feels good, combo your skills, cap your resistances, spend your orbs and treat every boss death as tuition. Do that, and by the time 1.0 arrives in December you will be the one linking builds in chat instead of asking why Act 2 keeps killing you.
